During the months of February and March 2012, the USAID Agribusiness Project will carry out a series of trainings with the aim of assisting the diversification of berry fruit production in Serbia.
The trainings will be carried out by eminent Serbian berry fruit experts in Surdulica, Vladicin Han, Kursumlija, Novi Pazar, Rekovac, Priboj, Prijepolje, Bajina Basta, Ljubovija and Mali Zvornik, and will target Producer Organizations such as Associations and Cooperatives.

120 women from Novi Pazar, Tutin, Sjenica, Prijepolje, Nova Varos, Priboj, Kucevo, Zagubica, Zabari, Majdanpek, Malo Crnice, Golubac and Petrovac are currently attending the agribusiness entrepreneurship training.  The training sessions are part of the Women in Agribusiness Program jointly implemented by the USAID Agribusiness Project and the Office for Sustainable Development of Underdeveloped Areas, within the Ministry without portfolio.

Tehnical Assistance

Technical assistance is provided by Project staff and by outside expert consultants.
To provide specialized and advanced expert assistance to enterprises, the Project regularly brings in leading international experts in fields ranging from business management to post harvest techniques.

Value Chain Consolidation
The Project helps connect enterprises with buyers, suppliers and ABDS providers in order to help them improve their position in the market and increase their competitiveness.

By promoting business cooperation within the sectors, the project helps enterprises identify opportunities to improve their value chain operations and the quality and accessibility of services provided to the sector.

Capacity Building
By providing expert support, the Project helps build capacity of partner enterprises in critical areas that include business planning; plant management; production; export; marketing; product development; harvest and post harvest management, finance, marketing and sales.

Marketing
The Project helps improve the marketing of agricultural enterprises by providing both local and international marketing assistance. The Project helps enterprises identify opportunities in high revenue markets and assists them in reaching those markets by means of direct market linkages or trade show participation.

International Quality and Safety Standards
Implementation of International Standards of quality and food safety is a key requirement for improving the competitiveness of Serbian agricultural enterprises along the value chains. The Project recognizes that and works to facilitate certification of Serbian enterprises in international standards such as GlobalGAP, ISO 14001, ISO 22000 and HACCP.

Improving Agribusiness Development Services (ABDS)
Agribusiness enterprise access to timely and effective ABDS is critical to improving decisionmaking, management, efficiency and competitiveness. The Project helps promote and support the establishment and expansion of ABDS providers all along the value chain from input supply to final product sale in each subsector.

Strengthening Producer Organizations
The Project strengthens existing producer organizations (cooperatives, associations, farmer groups), helping them become effective service providers to their membership and successful business enterprises.

Assistance in this area will focus on building selected organizations into competitive agribusiness firms, capable of responding to market opportunities and delivering effective ABDS to their members.
